I have a lot of guitar books and have taken a lot of lessons. The first few pages of this book did more to help me see the fretboard as a whole than anything else I've done in the last 20 years. The exercises really bring the CAGED system into the real musical world and keep you from getting bogged down with memorization. My only criticism is that the author saved space by only partially printing exercises. Figuring out the rest on your own is excellent practice, but I'd like to at least go online to make sure I'm doing them correctly.
I've only started working with the book but after briefly looking over the content and browsing through some chapters, I'm impressed. It's full of exercises that will improve a lot of areas of understanding and mechanics of playing. Alexander covers a lot of ground and while learning guitar is a lifelong endeavor it seems quite comprehensive. No single book could possibly cover everything is any real depth. That said I don't think lack of depth is an issue.It would help if the buyer has some basic understanding of theory but I wouldn't say it's over the heads of a more mature beginner of a certain age who has a great desire and commitment to learning the instrument. A little research to get a more complete understanding will help with areas one might not be familiar with.At this point I don't know what might make the book better other than maybe some tips on fingering which would help a beginner but I might have missed that. I plan to update this review as I progress through it. Even then I doubt I will rate it lower.
I have a bit of an addiction to buying instrument instruction books. For some reason, I think this one will stick. I've been playing guitar for about 24 years now. I can manage an improvised solo as long as a chord progression is pretty straight forward, but my confidence is not where I would like it to be, given any context.Logically, I know that there is no quick and easy way to become proficient at guitar, and it really just takes a ton of practice to get better. This book seems to do a good job of giving you the exercises that you need to start with, but highlighting the most important ones. That way, if you're like me and know that you're not going to spend 5 hours a day practicing due to work and family obligations, you can just stick to those highlighted exercises.I was surprised to find there was no cd with the book, but it provided digital downloads that I had no trouble accessing.In the end, this book will only end up being as valuable as the time I put into it.So far, I've been able to visit the skills presented in this book a little bit every day for the two weeks I've owned it. I can envision the proficiency it will lead to. It's just up to me whether or not I put the time in the make the ideas work.
I've been playing guitar for a long time now. I have a good understanding of chord shapes, scale patterns, modes, etc., but I've never felt like I could actually use those scales to make music. So far, this book has done more for me than countless hours practicing "ascend in groups of 4", etc. A very worthy purchase.Also of note, I purchased the Kindle edition and am very satisfied with the purchase. I can view the book on my phone or my Kindle Fire, all the information is present, and the author/publisher has made the music readily available via the magick of Internet. I'll definitely consider additional books by this author when I'm finished with this one.
I had this book on my shelf for over a year and then started to read and try the exercises. I've also dowlnoaded the audio files (free) from Mr. Alexanders website. The audio files are really helpful to me as it makes following the exercises much easier. The book is laid out very methodically. You can tell a lot of thought and expertise went into creating this book.There is lots for me to learn and even though it is in a methodical theory based book, the emphasis is on creating and not simply memorizing. I am very glad I purchased this book.
There are lots of ways to learn guitar scales and how to move around the fretboard. This book stresses learning patterns in an organized way and then quickly moving to creative use of the scales -- by, for instance, playing along with the backing tracks included in the book. IMHO this is a good way to learn scales as you will be internalizing a given scale without cementing it into a *rigid* pattern in muscle memory, which would happen from simply playing the scales up and down. After scales, the book moves on to mastering intervals and harmonies within the scales. For the beginner or intermediate guitarist this book contains a lot of great information clearly presented.

An exhaustive list of scales and scale patterns that are beautifully organized to make you really know the ins and outs of the fretboard. I had no questions while reading this book. It is laid out wonderfully. If you're looking to improve your knowledge of the fretboard making you a better lead guitarist/soloist, this book is for you.
